New In The Shop

Folkling Shop Update: Naturally Dyed

One of my main ethos’ in selling vintage is encouraging a more sustainable and ethically responsible lifestyle in myself and in others. It goes along with my five year pursuit of the art of slow living.

These pieces are a collection of vintage that I’ve held onto over the years because, despite stains or perceived plainness or lack of wear, I believed their bones were just too good to not be given a second life.
(See some of the before photos here!)

I have had various adventures in natural dyeing in the past, primarily with yarn and knitwear (see more here), but it was so much fun experimenting with clothing this time and some natural and simpler ways of dyeing that I hadn’t used before.

I had so much fun working on this collection and I hope you all find a little bit of inspiration to perhaps repurpose or recycle something in your own closet vs. throwing it out.

Sometimes we just need the chance to look at something through a different lens to fall in love with it all over again.

Daughter Of A Sailor Crochet Hooks

It all started when I saw the boat hook that my father, The Sailor, had made for Una.
"Hey this looks like a giant crochet hook..."
Wheels started turning and shortly after he made me a set of beautifully handcrafted crochet hooks for my Birthday. After some more wheels turned, and upon request, he made a much larger one

So of course, naturally, it's the first product brought to you by Tumblehome.

Each hook is artfully crafted from red oak and poplar, coated with shellac and waxed for an extra smooth finish.
As a final touch, each hook has a sailboat, the Tumblehome logo, burned into the end.
It's light in weight and a great hook for beginner crocheters!

They're each one-of-a-kind and measure 4" around (about 1 ¼" in diameter) and 12" long, which is larger than any hook sold in a craft store (yep, even larger than size Q), so you have so many unique creating possibilities with these beauties that no one else has.

If you'd like to be the owner of one of the few Daughter of A Sailor Crochet Hooks we have, head to the shop!

Happy to have such gorgeous photos that do these beautiful works of art justice.
Thanks to my life photographer Meagan for taking them.

OOAK Knits | The Montreux Cowl

The Montreux Cowl

The blues of Lake Geneva, Switzerland are what inspired this cowl.
It's a place that's unreal in its beauty, one of the most stunning I've been to in my travels.

This piece is made from a yarn that I've had in my stash for so long that I no longer remember where it's from. But it's blue tones brought me back to those incredible views as soon as I saw it.

Why one-of-a-kind?

These pieces are inspired by...
the places i’ve been,
the people i’ve met,
the words i’ve read,
the images i’ve created.

All of which are unique, to themselves, their own, one-of-a-kind.
Much like you are.

I believe that your clothing, what you wear, says a lot about you.
It adds to your story, your make-up, who you are as an individual.

And so, shouldn’t those pieces in and of themselves hold a story all their own?
I think so.
That’s why my knitwear is one-of-a-kind.
Each design is a piece of art.
Each piece tells a story.
Of a person. A place. An experience. An idea.
When you own one of these pieces you are the only one to own it.
Aside from me, the creator, you hold it’s story.
You are now the caretaker of it’s story.
And it, in turn, becomes a part of yours.
The Stories The Things We Own Tell.
I think they're terribly important, though often overlooked.
I find that the things we invest in are the things we cherish and value most. Which in turn speaks to what kind of individual we are. What we put stock in. Who we want to be.

OOAK Knits | The Motor City Vest

The Motor City Vest

Detroit Michigan in February is a very cold place.
Very cold.
I'm actually fairly certain I've never been as cold in my life as I was in Detroit in February.
And I've been to Chicago in December.
And Iceland.
Despite being miserably cold for the majority of this trip, I loved Detroit in a way that I can't quite explain.
Maybe it was the fact that, like Richmond, they also have a Belle Isle.
Maybe it was because I was Urbexing some of the coolest places I've ever seen with my best friend.
Or maybe it was simply because I was somewhere I'd never been, having some of the most unbelievable (read: borderline reckless) adventures. Because that's often all it takes for me to fall in love with a place.
(Ask me about driving 10 hours home in one of the worst ever snow storms sometime...)

Regardless, Detroit will always have a special place in my heart.

The grey shades of that snow covered, windswept city, inspired this textured patchwork vest.
It will definitely help keep you warm anytime, anywhere.
Even Detroit in February.

Yarn origin:  Reykjavík Iceland, Richmond VA, Boston MA.... and a lot of other unknown places

OOAK Knits | The Montmartre Sweater

The Montmartre Sweater

Inspired by the fashion forward city of Paris. A study in color brought forth this muted hazelnut tone that reminds me of a weekend spent walking underneath the eiffel tower, drinking wine at street side cafes, eating tasty pastries, shooting film, people watching on the train and lazing around a tiny apartment with balcony windows flung wide open to let out the sounds of Tracy Chapman and Billie Holiday cd's...

OOAK Knits | The Black Sands Cowl

The Black Sands Cowl

The black sand beaches of Iceland are what inspired this cowl.

The varying shades of dark to light of the sand as the tide went out.

A place unlike any other.

As soon as I came home and found this yarn, I knew exactly what I was going to make with it.

OOAK Knits | The Bowery Tank

The Bowery Tank

Inspired by the lines and symmetry of the concrete jungle.

New York City.

A place that holds the dreams and ambitions of so many.

It's certainly no stranger to housing some of my own.

Yarn origin: New York, NY
A lovely silk and extra soft merino blend makes up the body of the tank and the side panels are knit of a beautiful cotton yarn.

OOAK Knits | The Waterfront Crop Top

The Waterfront Crop Top

Waterfront: the land or the part of a town next to the water of an ocean, lake, etc.

This piece is inspired by the varying tones and colors found on the coast of many water bound places.

The places I find myself most often.

Because anywhere on the water is a place I call home...

Yarn origin: New York City, Maine, Richmond Va, Reykjavík Iceland, Hampton Va, and somewhere on the coast of Maine

OOAK Knits | The Mandalay Vest

The Mandalay Vest

Inspired by a beautiful house somewhere on the coast in Maine.

A place of peace and comfort.

A place that feels like home.

Yarn origin: Richmond, VA

A photo posted by Leney (@agirlnamedleney) on

This vest is one of my absolute favorite pieces from the first run of one-of-a-kind knits.
I'm having a hard time parting with it to be honest. I love it's geometric design, inspired by the layered siding of that lovely little house in Maine. It's a statement piece that would go with pretty much anything you wanted to pair it with.

While the majority of my knitting is done at home, occasionally a project will wander out with me on various adventures, to and from different places here and there.
One of the noteworthy places this vest went was to the movie theatre to watch Arcade Fire's documentary: The Reflektor Tapes.
Arcade Fire is one of my favorite bands. In fact their song, Keep The Car Running, is pretty much my anthem and mirrors one of the ideas and sentiments behind my OOAK knitwear being inspired by my travels.
Pieces made on the road.
Telling of the things I see and experience.
Always being ready for anything.
Wherever adventure awaits.
Keep the car running.

I'm going to be releasing new one-of-a-kind knits on a regular basis so this is only the start!
I just have to say again for the hundredth time how excited I am about this new aspect of my business and I can't wait to grow more as an artist and a story teller through this process.
Thank you all for your kind words and support on the unveiling thus far. It means the world to me.
